Remembering 9/11: Watch Today Show’s live broadcast of Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, “The Today Show” was broadcasting live as two airplanes piloted by terrorist hijackers crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. The footage and the live reaction have become some of the most iconic video of that day.

Less than two hours after the plane struck the buildings, the towers collapsed. By noon, a plane has struck the Pentagon and another went down in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers wrestled it away from hijackers intent on crashing it in Washington, D.C.

Today marks the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that claimed almost 3,000 lives.

The “Today Show” footage shows host Matt Laurer cutting away from an interview following reports that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. While live footage of the burning building aired, a second plane smashed into the other tower.

The footage is currently on permanent display at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City.
